Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.16%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.24%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.07%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 2.77% or 2.31 points to trade at 85.60 at the close. Meanwhile, Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) added 2.06% or 10.31 points to end at 511.04 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.97% or 0.81 points to 42.01 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which fell 1.95% or 7.88 points to trade at 395.43 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 1.35% or 4.43 points to end at 324.53 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was down 1.04% or 0.81 points to 76.78.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Garmin Ltd (NYSE:GRMN) which rose 12.64% to 241.93, Microchip Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MCHP) which was up 9.90% to settle at 63.59 and Analog Devices Inc (NASDAQ:ADI) which gained 9.74% to close at 241.66.
The worst performers were Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) which was down 21.46% to 54.91 in late trade, Axon Enterprise Inc (NASDAQ:AXON) which lost 16.42% to settle at 593.42 and Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:PLTR) which was down 10.08% to 112.06 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were JetAI Inc (NASDAQ:JTAI) which rose 150.00% to 10.15, Editas Medicine Inc (NASDAQ:EDIT) which was up 83.91% to settle at 3.20 and SINTX Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SINT) which gained 70.92% to close at 4.82.
The worst performers were Cns Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CNSP) which was down 41.19% to 0.08 in late trade, Nikola Corp (NASDAQ:NKLA) which lost 39.13% to settle at 0.47 and Healthcare Triangle Inc (NASDAQ:HCTI) which was down 36.38% to 0.46 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1554 to 1190 and 114 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1853 fell and 1430 advanced, while 140 ended unchanged.
Shares in Garmin Ltd (NYSE:GRMN) rose to all time highs; gaining 12.64% or 27.15 to 241.93. Shares in Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) fell to 5-year lows; falling 21.46% or 15.00 to 54.91. Shares in Cns Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CNSP) fell to all time lows; down 41.19% or 0.06 to 0.08.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.52% to 15.27.
Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.02% or 0.72 to $2,949.72 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.35% or 0.25 to hit $72.08 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.25% or 0.19 to trade at $76.03 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.20% to 1.04, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 151.50.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.10% at 107.06.
