Trump Media & Technology Group stock was falling ahead of Tuesday's opening bell, but the previous session's rally should give investors some hope that the Truth Social parent can deliver quick returns in 2025.
Shares of the company, which is majority owned by President-elect Donald Trump and trades under the ticker DJT in reference to his initials, were down 0.8% to $35.90 in the premarket. Futures tracking the S&P 500 edged up 0.1%.
DJT has traded pretty much flat the past few months, but climbed 4.5% on Monday as Congress voted to certify Trump's election win.
That should be a reminder to the market that the stock trades as a proxy for news about Trump, rather than based on its underlying fundamentals. That means it ought to get another bump on Jan. 20, when the billionaire businessman is set to be inaugurated as the 47th U.S. President.
Aside from that, it's tough to justify investing in shares based on the usual metrics such as profit and revenue. Trump Media posted a net loss of $19.2 million on sales of just $1 million for the third quarter, and Truth Social is competing with the likes of Meta Platforms site Facebook and Elon Musk's X in the crowded social-media market.
